the one that i want

My dad got this book for me the Christmas of 2010.
I hadn't gotten around to reading it until recently.

It was surprisingly good. It tells the story of a woman who leads a seemingly "perfect" life. Tilly the main character, is one of those people who always says yes, and wears a smile no matter what she's going through. She thinks her life is perfect... until an old classmate gives her the gift of "clarity".

I felt I understood the bigger picture of this book. I seen what the author was really getting at with the this novel. That so often we live in our day to day, and forget about ourselves - we get comfortable, or stressed, or this or that - but forget to love ourselves and ask the question: Is this what I want?

What do I want?

I think it's a valid point, and such a simple concept for most people - however - often we don't stop to breathe and listen to ourselves long enough to hear. Or long enough to SEE.

I enjoyed the idea of this book. I thought it was much more powerful that the simple storyline leads...

I'd recommend this for a lighthearted, easy read.

Sugar Skull DIY

I know it's a bit late, but I wanted to share anyways...

During the Halloween season, I decided I wanted to make a sugar skull.

Super cheap, and not too high on the difficulty scale.

The cool thing about it was that I got full creative control over the finished look.

I paper mached a skull "template", then used sandpaper to smooth out any bumps.

Next, I gave it a thick white coat of paint to start with a fresh canvas.

I decided to paint mine gold, use rhinestones, and ribbon as well - to spice it up a bit.

It was a fun little project for a seasonal decoration!

DIY Boho Boots

My second go...

I made these a bit taller than my others.

I'm pleased with the way they turned out, can't wait to wear them!

perfect

This book was different. It's one of her young adult books, and it's written in free verse, an open form of poetry.

This was an interesting book, following the lives of 4 teens with different idealisms of what "perfect" should look like, or what it looks like to others - and their struggle with that image.

Because of the way the book is written, it didn't take me long to finish. I took this book with me on vacation and was finished with it before my vacation ended.

I thought it was a decent book - I felt the author did a great job incorporating eating disorders, sexual orientation, suicide, and parental expectations. I wouldn't say the book was fully rounded though. The ending was very abrupt, and didn't really have a full conclusion you'd expect - or hope for. It was almost as if the whole book was building you up, and building you up - just to cut you off and leave you thinking... "what?!"

Worth the read.

Favorite Quotes:

"Her fingers knit with mine, and my heart tries to convince my brain that she's going to say the words I want to hear."

"Calories won't conquer me. They are the one thing I can control."

"Her kisses were typhoon, wind, rain and lightning, storming into open windows. SHe blanketed me with velvet skin, pillowed me with exotic perfume, lifted me onto a cloud just one breath away from heaven.
I couldn't say no. Didn't say stop. I wanted more. Wanted to for on forever, even after the first burst of rain. Even then I begged for downpour."

"I'm not worried about you, doll. But play the game. The last thing we want for you is treatment. They'll plump you up like a little piglet."

"...my body used and abused in more ways than I ever knew a body could be used, in exchange for everything I've ever wanted"

"I'll deal with it. Go hungry for it. Run miles and miles for it. Take pills that help me accomplish it."

"I hope to know love like that one day. Love you can't help but notice."

Henna

I've somewhat gotten back into something that my sister and I used to do back in high school.

It had been forever since I had done it, but I was glad when I decided to purchase some and go for it.

I've been loving the look of henna again.

I  haven't gone crazy, the one on my foot was probably the biggest thing I've done so far - and I don't know if I really cared for it. I think I prefer simple lines, dots, designs/details, etc. vs an elaborate design when it comes to being on parts of me that are exposed.

While, the henna paste is kind of a pain to store and make... I think it's worth it when all is said and done :)
